The French dairy group, Fromageries Bel, has acquired the Dutch Leerdammer dairy.
The acqusition brings one of Holland’s best known cheeses under the Fromageries Bel umbrella, which also comprises brands like Port-Salut, Mini Babybel and "The Laughing Cow."

Leerdammer claims to be Europe’s largest brand for firm cheese with sales totalling 292 million euro in 2001. Before the new deal, many expected the Dutch co-operative Campina to go for Leerdammer. However, Campina did not wish to outbid Fromageries Bel.

With a 2001 turnover of around 1.75 billion euro, Bel is one of the largest suppliers of branded cheese. The company intends to maintain production of Leerdammer at Schoonrewoerd near the town of Leerdam.
