Carbon net zero operations

As one of the world’s largest dairy producers, we believe our nutritious dairy products contribute to a better future for generations to come, but we also have a responsibility to reduce our climate impact.

That’s why we aim to reach Carbon Net Zero in all of our operations globally, from our sites to our trucks, by 2050.

Actions we’ve taken to reduce CO2e…

Reducing CO2e
Reducing CO2e

We have taken important steps in the right direction, significantly reducing CO2e emissions from our farms, and focusing on sustainability when we modernise or build new dairies. The CO2e reduction from Arla’s operations, including packaging and transport, has been 25 percent from 2005 to 2020.

Switching to renewable energy
Switching to renewable energy

In 2020, 31% of our power came from renewable energy sources (market-based), and we have switched entirely from fossil fuels to renewable fuels for all of our trucks in Sweden.

Our Targets are Scientist Approved

When it comes to reducing CO2e emissions, Arla is realistic, action led, and motivated to improve. We have already cut our CO2e output significantly, but there is more to do: our goal of reducing total CO2e emissions by 30% by 2030 has been approved by the Science-Based Target initiative as being aligned with climate science.

Carbon neutral organic products

Our organic product ranges in the Netherlands, Arla Ko® Eko in Sweden, and Arla® Øko in Denmark are now carbon neutral. That means we have reduced greenhouse gas emissions as much as we currently can and then compensated for the rest of the emissions. The compensation is primarily done by planting trees and protecting rainforest.

A Fossil-Free Future

To achieve our goal of Carbon Net Zero, we are working towards operations that are totally free of fossil fuels, instead relying on renewable energy sources that include wind turbines, solar panels, and even biogas from waste incineration.

Our global
ambition

  • Carbon net zero by 2050

  • Science based target of 30% reduction in CO2e from 2015-2030 which includes:

    • Scope 1&2: 30% absolute reduction in our greenhouse emissions
    • Scope 3: 30% reduction in greenhouse emissions per kg of raw milk.
