Arla Foods aims to cut 25 per cent of its emission of green house gases (GHG) within production, transport, and packaging by 2020. The target is ambitious, but the company must play its part in limiting climate change, states CEO Peder Tuborgh.

With this week's launch of the new climate target, employees across the group are now busy looking for ways of reducing GHG emissions by 25 per cent within 12 years.

"We don't have all the answers yet, but we're sending out a strong signal now to employees and business partners that, as a major company, we take our GHG emissions very seriously. We want to offer customers and consumers more climate friendly products and contribute to national and international climate targets," says CEO Peder Tuborgh.
Arla Foods' worldwide GHG emissions are estimated at 1.5 million tonnes a year within production, transport, and packaging.

"We have already achieved a lot in our company and have in recent years increased our investments, delivering good results. And therefore it's now time to set new targets," says Peder Tuborgh.

As a Danish-Swedish co-operative, Arla is able to focus on the whole value chain from cow to consumer. To this end, Arla Foods intends to actively support and cooperate with organisations within the company's three home markets; Sweden, Denmark, and UK.

"As an example, Arla Foods will initiate a research project with other organisations within the dairy sector in the UK, Sweden and Denmark to learn more about how to also reduce the GHG emissions from dairy farms," says Peder Tuborgh.

The new climate target is part of Arla Foods' environmental strategy, which is based on the ethical programme Our Responsibility, the group's guidelines for responsibility towards society, the environment and people in general.
