On Monday, December 6 Arla Foods’ new milk powder factory in Vimmerby received 160 tons milk from nearby farms for the first genuine trial runs following initial trials with water.

The plant is scheduled to start proper production on December 23 when the new plant will begin to process 800,000 kg milk per day. The factory, however, is not expected to work at full capacity until April 2005.

Arla Foods has invested approximately DKK 800 million in the new plant which will eventually employ a workforce of 60. Currently, Vimmerby has a staff of 40 people to receive the 20 tankers per day that are expected to arrive in the final days of the year.

The factory is scheduled to produce approximately 44,000 tons milk powder annually from the 380 million kg milk which will be delivered to the factory. This corresponds to 20% of Arla Foods’ total milk volume in Sweden.

The first milk arrives at the milk powder factory in Vimmerby. The factory is scheduled to receive 800,000 kg milk per day.
