Canadian Christmas with new Arla cheeses

A visit to Denmark last year by the President of Arla Foods Canada marked the beginning of what might just turn out to be a Canadian success story.
President of Arla Foods Canada, Doug C. Smith.These days Vrinners Dairy in Denmark is busy producing 32 tons of decorated cheese rolls that will be launched in Canada for Christmas. The dairy will produce a total of 256,000 of the 125g rolls over the next months.
“We’ve had to pull out all the stops and have taken on five new employees who’ll be with us until the Christmas production ends in the New Year,” says Dairy Manager Bent Hansen.
It all started when Doug C. Smith, President of Arla Foods Canada, and Marketing Manager Jens Kauffmann, visited Denmark and Vrinners Dairy in October 2005. They sampled all the varieties of cream cheese to identify those most suitable for the Canadian market.
“Doug C. Smith immediately fell for our Buko cream cheese rolls and decided there and then to bring them to Canada,” explains Bent Hansen.
The choice fell on four rolls fla-voured with pepper, rum, paprika and chocolate/mocca. So far, the latter has only been available in Japan, but Doug C. Smith is confident that it is destined for success in Canada.
“Who in the world doesn’t like chocolate and coffee?” he says.
“And chocolate and mocca go much better with cheese than you imagine. It was quite simply my favou-rite. But I had to play my trump card as boss to include it in our range. I believe that this cheese has enormous potential.”
Arla Foods Canada has distributed samples to their customers and the response has been excellent. The last of the entire 32 tons will be shipped off in early November – with the voyage taking four weeks.
