The Gaio® tagatose sweetener has been approved by JECFA (The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives).

Until now, Gaio® tagatose has been approved for doses not exceeding of 7.5g per person per day, limiting its practical use as a sweetener in food products and drinks. The lifting of the restriction, therefore, opens up a range of new opportunities for Gaio® tagatose.

The recommendation by JECFA is particularly important in that many countries across the world, including Europe, follow JECFA’s approvals.

“JECFA’s decision means that we’re likely to obtain faster approval for Gaio® tagatose in other countries,” says Mads Vigh from Arla Foods Ingredients. “The approval has significant commercial value for us.” Mads Vigh was recently appointed the new Director of SweetGredients, the manufacturer of Gaio® tagatose.
