Ireland-based Glanbia plc, Dairy Farmers of America and Select Milk Producers Inc. have formed a joint venture and are to build one of the world’s largest dairies.

The new plant, to be built in New Mexico, will annually process over 1 billion litres milk and produce 115,000 tons cheese, i.e. half Arla Foods’ annual cheese production of 330,000 tons.
Besides cheese, the dairy will also produce 7,500 tons of whey protein products per year and is set to become one of the largest cheese and whey production plants in the world.

The new plant, which will cost $170 million, will be 50% owned by Glanbia which will be responsible for day-to-day plant operations, marketing and sales.
The dairy is expected to be commissioned in the summer of 2005.
