Based on the theme of ”The Ugly Duckling” by Denmark’s world famous storyteller, Hans Christian Andersen, Arla Foods Ingredients’ presented its new Gaio-tagatose product at last week’s IFT 2003 Food Fair in Chicago.

Extracted from whey, once a residual product fed to livstock, Gaio-tagatose, a low-calorie sweetener, can be compared to the ugly duckling in the fairytale which eventually developed into a beautiful swan.

Account manager for Gaio-tagatose, Josephine O'Brien, confirms that the IFT fair generated considerable interest in the new sweetener.

“Not only are low-calorie products particularly popular in the US, but food producers are also constantly on the look-out for natural sweeteners, “ she explains. “Our stand attracted many visitors and we made contact with several potential customers with an interest in Gaio-tagatose.”

During the fair, visitors to Arla Foods Ingredients' stand had an opportunity to sample ice cream sweetened with Gaio-tagatose.

The IFT 2003 Food Fair attracted around 1,000 exhibitors and 20,000 attendees.
