A few hours after yesterday’s atrocity in New York and Washington, Arla Foods’ Corporate Communications was in touch with its subsidiary in New Jersey. Director Jens Bang Pedersen sent the following report:

"This inconceivable disaster hit New York on Tuesday morning. Our office in Union, New Jersey, is 10 miles (16 km) West of Newark Airport. We are on the ground floor of a four-storey building.

We have asked all our staff to donate blood - as much as possible - and as soon as possible. Everyone here at the office is ok - and at the moment we have no knowledge of any of our staff’s families being involved.

Some staff members are currently travelling and we don’t expect them to be able to return for some days. Niels Erik Larsen is in Denmark, Niels Ulrich Pedersen is in Brazil, Bernard Barthlott is in Mexico and Jon Zieman is in Detroit.

Our fax and e-mail systems are still operating, but overseas telephone lines are seriously over burdened. We don’t have a TV at the office so I’m sure you know more about the situation than we do."

18 staff are employed at Arla Foods’ New Jersey office which runs licenced production valued at DKK 680 million per year.

Arla Foods is an international dairy company owned by more than 8,400 farmers from Denmark, Sweden, the UK, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
