The Dutch/German dairy company Campina Melkunie formed last week following the merger between the Dutch Campina Melkunie and the German Milchwerke Köln Wuppertal, is now the third largest dairy company in Europe in terms of volume of milk received.

The merger increases Campina Melkunie’s annual milk volume from 5.2 billion kg to 6 billion kg milk which means that the new group overtakes Europe’s previous number three, the Dutch Friesland Coberco. The increase is not a result of the merger with Milchwerke Köln Wuppertal as the German co-operative owners were already sole suppliers to the joint company Tuffi Campina Emzett, but rather to the fact that the milk volume from the Berlin-based Emzett, which forms the third part of Tuffi Campina Emzett, is now included in Campina Melkunie’s total volume of milk.
Arla Foods continues to head the European milk league with 7.1 billion kg milk received per annum with the French Lactalis (6.5 billion kg) second. The Dutch Friesland Coberco, which receives 5.3 billion kg now takes fourth place after Campina Melkunie. The German Nordmilch comes in fifth with 4.7 billion kg.

Arla Foods is an international dairy company owned by more than 8,400 farmers from Denmark, Sweden, the UK, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
