Arla Foods’ milkmen fight the floods

Arla Foods’ milkmen in the UK continue to battle against widespread flooding in order to deliver fresh milk to customers.
The flooding, which has caused havoc throughout the UK, has hit Yorkshire, one of the key areas for Arla Foods’ doorstep milk deliveries, particularly hard. Several rivers have burst their banks and in the historic city of York, where Arla Foods has a milk depot, the water level rose 4 metres above normal levels. The fact that the majority of “doorstep milk” deliveries takes place at night has further complicated matters.
“It’s been particularly hard in the villages around York,” says Depot Manager Richard Lower. “We’ve been forced to turn back several times and wait until daylight so we can at least see the water.”
Although Arla Foods’ head office and dairy in Leeds are only 50 km from York, the buildings here are unaffected by the floods because of its higher elevation.
Staff, however, are keeping a careful eye on the River Aire, which runs just behind the Arla Foods’ head office. The river has already burst its banks in several places.
“Fortunately, there are some high banks either side of the river so we have a couple of metres to spare,” says Product Business Unit Controller Henrik Nygaard.
