"A step along the road." This is how MD Foods Ingredients welcomes the decision of the US Food and Drug administration (FDA) to allow the calorie content of tagatose to be described as "1.5 kcal/g" in line with other low calorie sweeteners in the US market.

The decision by the FDA means that products containing tagatose, a sweetener extracted from milk, can be declared as "light" in line with American legislation.
MD Foods Ingredients, which acquired the patent for tagatose from the American firm, Biospherics, is currently awaiting a so-called GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approval from the American authorities.
