There is no doubting the popularity of Danish milk with West Berliners. This is why the small, privately-owned Berlin supermarket, Butter-Lindner, features full-cream milk from MD Foods' Tyrstrup Dairy.

Blind tastings of milk from Tyrstrup have proved it a winner several times and have resulted in firm orders from the German chain which operates 47 branches in Germany's new capital, most of them in old West Berlin.

"Although Danish milk is almost twice as expensive as local German milk, customers are willing to pay more for better quality," said Butter-Lindners Marketing Manager Claudia Mehrl to the Danish daily, Politiken.

Dairy Manager Ulrich Eberle (Tyrstrup Dairy) is delighted that Butter-Lindner has declared milk from Tyrstrup to be the world's best milk

Butter-Lindner, which sells MD's milk under the slogan "The White Gold from Denmark" has sold Tyrstrup milk for 25 years and currently dispatches five articulated lorries carrying milk, cream and various types of fromage frais from Christiansfeld in Southern Jutland to Berlin. Skimmed milk will be added from the autumn.

Following German reunification, the chain explored the possibility of linking up with local suppliers in the former East Germany. The search, however, proved unsuccessful.

"We were unable to find suppliers who, in terms of milk quality, could match Danish milk," says Claudia Mehrl. "The bacterial count of Danish milk is so low that it has a shelf life of up to 10 days. In Germany, the norm is 6 days."

Milk for Butter-Lindner is produced at Tyrstrup Dairy in accordance with the same processes and deadlines as Fresh Milk supplied by MD to Danish consumers.

Dairy Manager Ulrich Eberle, Tyrstrup Dairy, takes considerable pride in the German view of Danish milk: "I'm delighted to hear that our customers think our milk is the best in the world. Butter-Lindner is not just another multiple, but a chain with a significant delicatessen business. Our milk, therefore, slots in well with the rest of the ality products sold by the chain."
