German food retail trade stagnating

Last year's incipient stagnation in the German consumer sector has now taken hold. Recent figures for the overall turnover in Germany's retail sector show a fall of DM 300 million, to DM 191.2 billion.

With a turnover of DM 45 billion (against 45.6 billion the previous year), Edeka remains the largest German multiple. Rewe is number 2 with a turnover of 40.5 billion against 40.2 the previous year.

Germany had a total of 68,400 convenience stores in 1998, 2,000 fewer than the year before.
