In Denmark and Sweden, Arla Foods is committed to reducing fuel consumption for both milk collection and distribution.

In the effort to save on fuel, drivers are helped by an electronic system installed in their vehicles. This enables them to check daily diesel consumption as well as monitor consumption over an hour, a week or a month.

In Sweden, tanker drivers have received training in "eco-driving", a more fuel efficient driving style.

Safe working environment
"We want to minimise the impact on the environment and create a good and safe working environment for our drivers,”  says Environment Consultant Betina Goul, Arla Foods. ”Also, as Arla has a large fleet of vehicles and is highly visible on the roads, it’s important that we drive safely and efficiently.”

In terms of Danish inter-dairy transport alone, stronger focus on more efficient fuel consumption from January to October this year has resulted in savings of DKK 2.7 million compared to the budget for 2007, which is DKK 48 million.

In 2007, milk tankers are expected to cover 20.1 million km collecting milk from Danish farms.
