Arla Foods’ new Cave Cheese – Höhlenkäse mild-würzig – has been voted Product of the Year 2000 within the category for cheese sold at delicatessen counters. The award was made by the German trade magazine, Milch-Marketing, and is based on the response to a list of 298 new dairy products sent out to around 1,000 dairy product buyers and 10,000 of the magazine’s subscribers.
Höhlenkäse mild-würzig, like the traditional Cave Cheese, is produced at Vellev Dairy and is stored in limestone caves at Mønsted in Jutland. A new type of cheese, it slots in between danbo and emmental.
Based on the traditional Danbo-type Höhlenkäse, the flavour is reminiscent of the nutty taste of emmental. The holes, however, are slightly bigger.
The award carries a gold medal which will be used in advertisements for Höhlenkäse mild-würzig and as a label.
