Arla Foods has sent a project manager to the Dominican Republic to examine opportunities for setting up milk production in the Caribbean island state, to which Arla has exported Milex milk powder for more than 50 years.

Arla Foods’ Supervisory Board was informed of the project, which will be implemented in co-operation with Arla Foods’ local partner, Mejia Acala, on Tuesday.

Plans for an Arla dairy in the Dominican Republic have been under consideration for several years. Although originally the idea was to build a new dairy, the project will now involve the acquisition of an existing plant due to the financial problems of the local dairy industry.

”Consumers in the Dominican Republic know Milex as a healthy and tasty product and we believe there are good opportunities for exploiting the Milex brand in other product categories – initially for UHT milk,” explains Divisional Director Peter Lauritzen, Arla Foods Ingredients.

Arla Foods’ Supervisory Board will consider the outcome of the investigation after the summer. If the project is given the go-ahead, the production of long-life milk can begin.

David Cueto, Director of the Dominican National Council for the Regulation and Development of the Milk Industry, Conaleche, welcomes Arla’s move.
”The Danish-Swedish brand, Milex, is the largest in the market and Dominican milk producers can benefit from this,” he says.
