The threat of the UK foot and mouth epidemic spreading to the continent and Scandinavia has forced Arla Foods to cancel all visits to farms and Arla Foods dairies in Denmark and Sweden. No Arla Foods dairies will receive visitors for at least the next two weeks, while farm visits have been suspended until further notice.

Between 5,000 and 6,000 school children visit Danish dairy farms each year while 20,000 visitors of all ages visit the three large Arla Foods dairies at Brabrand outside Århus, Taulov at Fredericia in Central Jutland and Slagelse on Zealand. In Sweden, a total of 50,000 school children visit Arla Foods dairy farms every year.
“It’s obvious that even one case of foot and mouth disease in Denmark or Sweden would have very serious consequences,” said Peter Kjelstrup, Director of Corporate Communications, Arla Foods. “Therefore, it’s vitally important that we do everything possible to safeguard against the virus infecting our herds, either directly or through our dairies.”
