THE FARMS

Where everything begins

As a farmer-owned cooperative, Arla works closely with farmer owners across seven European countries. Arla has an SBTi-validated target to reduce absolute Scope 3 FLAG greenhouse gas emissions by 30.3% by 2030, from a 2020 base year. The target covers emissions associated with raw milk and sourced whey.

Turning on-farm activities into points

Through the FarmAhead™ Incentive Model, participating farmer owners earn points for selected activities such as feed efficiency, manure management and the use of renewable electricity. More points mean a higher incentive payment as part of the milk price. Based on Arla’s current milk volume, up to EUR 500 million may be distributed annually through the model.

Measuring the carbon footprint on farms

Finding opportunities to reduce emissions starts with data. That’s where FarmAhead™ Check comes in. It collects more than 200 data points per farm – from what the cows eat to the energy used on the farm. The submitted data is validated by third-party advisors and helps farmer owners understand their farm’s carbon footprint. Aggregated data also helps Arla identify patterns and share learnings with farmers, researchers, policymakers and industry partners.

The big 5

It always helps to have focus. Based on data from FarmAhead™ Check, Arla has identified five areas with potential to reduce emissions intensity on farms: feed efficiency, protein efficiency, animal robustness, fertiliser use and land use. We call them the ‘Big 5’. Which activities are relevant and feasible depends on the conditions at each farm.

The big 5

Hello, I’m a farmer

The milk you drink and the yogurt you enjoy have been through the hands of someone like Vagn, Sara and Kristoff – our hardworking farmer owners. Every single farmer is at the heart of the business and makes a difference, every day – from caring for their cows to working to lower emissions. They’re part of a community of several thousand farmers across seven countries who share knowledge, challenges, and successes.
